John, for backpacking I suggest as short as possible. It helps with how it fits on your backpack, especially once you mount a ballhead (or whatever head you choose) and the shorter the tripod the less it snags on branches, brush, etc.
I have found the 4 section to be very sturdy in all but heavy wind load situations. Then I just hang a weight from the hook and good to go as long as you don't let it swing around.

You really have to choose what works best for your needs. As you know it is an investment.

I found the swing-out style too bouncy with up to 6-8 lbs of camera, so test it with your chosen rig. FYI, Feisol also makes a horizontal adapter:

My story sounds so similar to many of the reviews I've come across about moving from older tried and true aluminum tripods to carbon for lightness, but still wanting the sturdiness and durability. I'm close to a decision about a Feisol Tournament, and would like opinions on 3-section vs 4-section legs. It's tempting to go with the most compact folded size (I backpack with my gear) but for the sake of about 4" difference what is the tradeoff for sturdiness, leg vibration, etc.

Also am tempted by the Manfrotto 055CXPRO3. Not as light as Feisol, but has 29mm top leg diam, and the ability to mount the centre column horizontally. Is this as useful for macro as I've been told, or more unnecessary complication? The 4-section version of this tripod has 16mm diam lowest leg, which is too skinny.

Appreciate any insights!

My pleasure Doug. Also looks like there are lots on the market now. Saw that Tiffen has one now, as well as several other brands. A great tool!

Landon:

I was just looking into vari-ND solutions and was thinking about sending you email to ask if you had any experience with these when google popped up with this review! Thanks for the useful information.

Amazing job, especially in what must have been very hard photographic conditions (short window to shoot & low light)

I wasn't aware of these - it certainly looks like a cheaper alternative to the Vari-ND, yet without compromising on image quality.

Unfortunately B&H are out-of-stock of the 77mm Fader ND...

I have not seen that issue, but I am inspecting the CSS that came with this template to see how I can improve it. Thanks for the feedback!

I am still trying to reverse out just the blog part and not affect the rest of the template so I can keep the theme, but have black text on white blog entries.

That was too easy by the way, it was just a URL issue I did not test at the bottom of the page.
